On primetime TV, two interviewers questioned him brusquely enough to bring a sweat to his upper lip – but cut their interrogation to a mere 13 min- utes so they could get to their next guest, Neil Diamond. The Brit tabloids focused on Simpson’s golf game. The ex-athlete’s PR man said Simpson liked Britain so much he might buy a house there – and that was before the Union gave him a standing ovation for explaining that he fled in the Bronco because “I had a tough week.” If he was hoping to be taken seriously, though, he was probably disappointed. One student shrugged off Simpson’s appearance as “a bit of light relief” before final exams.
