The West Geauga High School teacher showed the image of the popular cartoon character with a black eye and posing for a police mugshot. In the picture, Dora—a Latino character who speaks Spanish—is shown following an arrest for illegal border crossing and resisting arrest.

The image was placed alongside what appears to be a white convicted felon with several face and neck tattoos, reports Fox 8 Cleveland. Both images are meant to show examples of people who are ineligible to vote.

A parent whose son was in the 11th grade AP government class said she was “outraged” by the image.

“Whether this teacher intended it to be a joke, something he found online it’s simply inappropriate and outrageous,” Stephanie Anderson told Fox 8.

“Seeing that white supremacist juxtaposed with a brown skinned child who has a superimposed black eye, blood coming from her mouth with the offense of illegal border crossing and resisting arrest combined with 666 666666 is 100 percent inappropriate,” the parent added.

Anderson also pointed out how the image is not even accurate as undocumented immigrants wouldn’t be able to vote anyway. Dora herself wouldn’t be able to vote as she is a child, and the charges she is accused of are both misdemeanors.

“There are so many other more appropriate ways to get your point across,” Anderson added.

“It’s not okay for either extreme. So whether you are very liberal or very conservative at either end of the spectrum, imparting your views on your students in a non-educationally beneficial way is unacceptable.”

In a statement to Fox 8, the school’s superintendent Richard Markwardt said: “We are investigating the matter related to the politically-insensitive slides allegedly contained in a teacher’s classroom presentation today.

“The teacher has been placed on leave pending the results of the investigation.”

Elsewhere, students at the school have shown support for the social studies teacher Wesley Rogge, with some planning a class walkout on Monday in protest.

Simon J. Reichert, a senior student at West Geauga High School, told Newsweek: “Wes Rogge is a great educator and he has always been very supportive of his students’ beliefs.

“The photo that is making the situation go viral has been taken out of context severely.

“The kid(s) who were offended by the content in his class went to their parents and the parents are railing [against] our teacher online. My peers and I will not stand for this at all.” Fellow student Anne Marie Allegretti tweeted: “I can’t believe what is going on at WGHS. Mr Rogge is trying to spark discussions in his classroom. He has zero political intent. He’s not trying to insult anyone.

“The administration should let him teach these kids how to think both sides of the issues. Rogge for president!” Allegretti added.

Jax Shenkel wrote: “Mr. Rogge is genuinely the best teacher I had while at West Geauga. He actually cares about his students outside of the classroom and wants what’s best for them. 90% of students and staff would agree. @WestGHigh Do not take this man’s job away.”

Rogge did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
