Top-Tier Plays

Gary Woodland    The stats would suggest that Gary Woodland wouldn’t be an ideal course fit as his driving accuracy is below average. However, whenever Woodland is forced to club down off the tee, his accuracy goes up immensely and sets him up well for his solid short iron and wedge game. He played great at this event last year, finishing second, and he enters in good form this year.  I love him as a cheaper pivot off of the very top priced players.  Zach Johnson    A course that requires accuracy and not length off the tee… sounds like an event made for Zach Johnson. Year after year, Johnson is one of the most accurate drivers on tour, and his short iron/wedge game remains among the best. I’m not concerned with the lack of course history here as Johnson is an ideal fit for this course on paper.     Mid Tier Plays    Anriban Lahiri    I’ve mentioned a few times in these articles that I’m going to play Lahiri any time we get to a short course where players club down off the tee, and there is no reason to stray from that formula this week in Mexico. Lahiri has some decent success on the unique putting surface that we’ll see this week and had a solid top-30 finish in his first and only start at this event last season.  Emiliano Grillo    After struggling for stretches last season, Grillo looks to finally be turning his game back around to the promise we saw from him during his rookie season. He is an accurate player off the tee and had a good showing here last season with a top-10 finish. When Grillo gets hot, he can make birdies with the best of them. He is my favorite overall play in the $7,000 range.

Value Plays    Martin Flores    Flores has rolled over his solid form from the end of last season straight into three straight made cuts during the swing season.  After struggling the last few seasons at this event, Flores had a respectable top-25 finish here last season. In cash games, there are very few sub $7,000 players that you feel good about, but Flores has a “safe” feeling about him this week.   Camilo Villegas Villegas is another cheap player who has been solid, but not spectacular so far this season. However, he is an ideal fit for El Camaleon as his low stinger off the tee plays excellent at this course. His course history wouldn’t suggest massive upside, but he should make the cut and has top-25 appeal for only $6,900.
