The Taliban abruptly arrested all eight women on Sunday, accusing MacMakin of spying and attempting to convert Muslims to Christianity. The arrests came after the Taliban announced a ban prohibiting women from working for aid agencies, which they later said they would rescind. MacMakin denied the charges and succeeded in getting her staff out of jail.
