The Taliban abruptly arrested all eight women on Sunday, accusing MacMakin of spying and attempting to convert Muslims to Christianity. The arrests came after the Taliban announced a ban prohibiting women from working for aid agencies, which they later said they would rescind. MacMakin denied the charges and succeeded in getting her staff out of jail. But the authorities threw her out of the country. “I know I will come back,” MacMakin said as she boarded a Red Cross flight to Pakistan. But she added: “I don’t know when.”
