With the famed Claret Jug up for grabs, Hovland and McIlroy are knotted at the top of the leaderboard. The pair dazzled in Round 3, posting matching 6-under 66s to wrest the lead from the two Camerons, Australian Cameron Smith and American Cameron Young, who both faltered after strong starts to the tournament.

McIlroy mentioned the need to play “boring golf,” making sure not to extend himself too much, especially not after making birdie or, in one case, eagle.

Hovland is the underdog in this matchup, but the Norwegian has put together three wins during a little more than two years on the PGA Tour. If he can stay consistent, Hovland’s name could be in the lights come the end of Sunday.
