First-time nominee Jaime Lee Curtis shared an Instagram post of her reaction to earning a best supporting actress nomination for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

“THIS IS WHAT SURPRISE LOOKS LIKE!,” she wrote. “The first is the moment of hearing my name, and then the thrill of my friend, Stephanie [Hsu]’s name, and the rest of the nominations and then the best thing of all, a loving embrace for my husband. No filters. No fakery. Just the truth of a moment of joy captured by a friend.”

Castmate and fellow nominee Michelle Yeoh says her historic best actress nomination will open doors to other Asian actors.

“What it means to me, is all those Asians out there go, ‘You see, it’s possible. If she can do it, I can freaking well do it as well,’” she told Deadline. “That is the most important thing. I’m very ordinary. I just work very hard. There are so many brilliant actresses, actors out there who know that they have a seat at the table. All they have to do is find an opportunity and get there.”

She added that this nomination is not just for her.

“Sometimes you don’t do things for yourself. You tell stories because it’s important for that story to be told,” she said. “And you need need it to be out there. And I understand the need for our Asians to turn around and say, ‘We need this,’ because it just validates that we deserve to have a seat at the table, and we deserve to be part of all this.”

Irish actor Paul Mescal shared his reaction to his first Oscar nomination.

“This is truly a special moment for everyone involved in Aftersun,” he said in a public statement. “To be recognized by the Academy is such an insane honor and I’m so utterly grateful. I want to dedicate this nomination to my two friends [director] Charlotte [Wells] and [co-star] Frankie [Corio] who I love dearly! This is bananas, thank you!”

His sister, singer Nell Mescal, shared a screenshot of her family’s reaction to Paul’s nomination.

“I would post the video of my reaction but those tears were ugly,” she said in a tweet. “I am so proud it is making me sick.”

Colin Farrell, another Irish actor and first-time nominee, said he was “beyond honored” this morning.

“[I’m] just so grateful to the Academy for all the love it’s shared with the Banshees’ cast and crew,” he said in a statement to PA news agency. “Also, beyond honoured to be lumped together with my fellow nominees. A heartfelt congratulations to all the lads.”

Farrell’s Banshees of Inisherin costar Brian Gleason said she was “proud and grateful” to be part of the film and is “thrilled” for the whole cast and crew on their nine nominations.

“What a day for the Irish film industry on a world stage,” he said in a public statement. “Feels like a huge family outing on the cards. Thank you, Academy. Thank you, [director] Martin [McDonagh]! Thank you all!”

The Academy banned Smith from attending the Oscars and all other Academy events for 10 years after he slapped fellow actor and comedian Chris Rock onstage. The slap followed a joke Rock made about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

The Academy announced its decision to ban Smith last spring on April 8, less than two weeks after the 94th Academy Awards on March 27. Smith had resigned from the Academy a few days after the slap.

At the time the ban was announced, Smith responded by releasing a brief statement that said, “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”

Smith apologized to Rock for the slap the day after it happened and later released a filmed apology, during which he again apologized to Rock, Rock’s family, his own family and the other Academy members.

Smith received the Best Actor award for his performance in King Richard at last year’s ceremony, shortly after he slapped Rock. It is possible for Smith to be nominated for another Oscar during his ban from Academy events, though he would be unable to attend if he were to be nominated or win.

Smith was not among the actors nominated during Tuesday morning’s Oscars nominations ceremony.

The list of first-time nominees includes young actors in breakout roles, as well as iconic actors finally gaining recognition after long careers in Hollywood.

This is the first Oscar nominiation for every star in the Best Actor category. This includes young actors like Austin Butler and Paul Mescal, as well as legacy actors Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser and Bill Nighly.

Both Butler and Farrell won Golden Globes this year for their roles in Elvis and The Banshees of Inisherin, respectively. Fraser won the Critics’ Choice Award for his role in The Whale.

The main cast of Everything Everywhere All At Once are all celebrating their first Oscar nominations as well.

Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, nominated for lead actress and actor, respectively, won the Golden Globe for their roles earlier this year.

Jaime Lee Curtis and breakout star Stephanie Hsu were both nominated for supporting actress.

Two other actresses in the supporting actress category, Hong Chau and Kerry Condon, are also first-time nominees for their roles in The Whale and The Banshees of Inisherin, respectively.

In the supporting actor category, Brian Tyree Henry of Causeway and Barry Keoghan and Brendan Gleeson of The Banshees of Inisherin are all first-time nominees.

The highly anticipated sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun hit the box office in May of 2022 after several delays due to COVID-19. This is Bassett’s second Oscar nomination. She earned her first Academy Award in 1993 for her lead role in What’s Love Got to Do with It.

For her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Bassett has already won a Golden Globe and a Critics’ Choice Award and earned a BAFTA and SAG nomination this awards season.

While the MCU has been nominated for several technical awards at the Oscars, this is the first time a Marvel film is being recognized by the Academy for acting.

The first Black Panther film earned three wins for Costume Design, Production Design, Original Score and was nominated for Best Picture and Original Song.

The nine-time Grammy-Award winner was nominated for her song “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Rihanna will face fellow Grammy Award winner Lady Gaga, who was nominated for her song “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick. Gaga won an Oscar for Best song in 2019 for the smash hit from A Star is Born, “Shallow.”

“Lift Me Up” was also nominated for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes, but lost earlier this month to fellow Oscar nominee “Naatu Naatu” for the Indian film RRR.

This nomination comes just weeks before Rihanna will make her highly-anticipated return to performing at the Super Bowl halftime Show.
