But the song was not snubbed by the Academy, it was not even submitted for consideration. Disney decided to submit Encanto’s ballad “Dos Oruguitas” instead.
While Encanto debuted in theaters Thanksgiving weekend, it did not hit streaming until a month later. Once on Disney+, “Bruno” took off.
The song has nearly 125 million streams on Spotify and is currently sitting at the top of the Billboard Top 100. It has surpassed Aladdin’s “A Whole New World” as Disney’s longest-running No. 1 hit.
“No one could have predicted the success of the soundtrack, much less that ‘Bruno’ was going to be the one that popped off,” songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda told the Elvis Duran Show.
Miranda added that when choosing a song to submit for consideration, he leans towards the one that “best exemplifies the spirit of the movie itself.”
“That’s always the guiding principle. And for us, ‘Dos Oruguitas’ is the foundational story,” he said. “It’s a song I’m really proud of. It’s one of the only songs I’ve ever written that made my wife cry. And so I’m really proud to enter that into consideration.”
Garfield received his second Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Larson, the composer of RENT who died in 1996.
He told the Hollywood Reporter this nomination is as much Larson’s as it is his.
“This movie is kind of that on the grandest scale possible. It’s a story that’s obviously so deeply moving and so deeply important and teaches us how to live and reminds us who we are and what matters and what doesn’t,” he said. “It’s a call to life, it’s a call to community, it’s a call to love, it’s what Jonathan Larson was singing for.”
He added that this nomination comes on behalf of Larson and “everyone that loves him.”
“I feel very, very lucky, very, very grateful and happy,” Garfield said.
Because the film only received one nomination, Garfield said he is representing the entire cast and crew.
“I feel like we’ve all been honored through this morning, it’s an all for one, one for all kind of thing,” he said. “It’s that great theater community that you only really get when you’re making a play, and so we’re all just kind of one unit. We’ve all been honored this morning in that way.”
With a Best Actor nomination for The Tragedy of Macbeth, Washington now has 10 Oscar nominations.
His first nomination was for his supporting role in 1987’s Cry Freedom. Since then, he has been nominated nine times for acting, including for his role as Malcom X in 1993.
Washington received both an acting and best picture nomination for his 2017 film Fences.
His two Oscar wins come from his performances in 1989’s Glory and 2002’s Training Day.
His film West Side Story is up for both Best Director and Best Picture in the 94th annual Academy Awards.
Spielberg has been nominated as a director eight times in six decades.
His first directing nomination came in 1978 for Close Encounters of the Third Kind. After that, the streak continued.

The Power of the Dog and Don’t Look Up are streaming on Netflix but are also both playing in select theaters.
CODA is also playing in select theaters, but is exclusively streaming on Apple TV.
Many films are available across several streaming platforms.
Nightmare Alley is streaming on Hulu and HBO Max as well as playing in select theaters.
While Dune and King Richard were streaming on HBO Max, they are no longer available on the platform. Dune is now on Prime Video and Apple TV while King Richard is playing in select theaters and can be streamed on Prime Video, Google Play and Vudu.
Belfast had a theatrical release but is also available to stream on Prime Video, Vudu, iTunes and Google Play.
Other films only had exclusive theatrical releases. West Side Story, Drive My Car and Licorice Pizza can only be seen in theaters.
Penelope Cruz was nominated for Best Actress for her role in Parallel Mothers while her husband Javier Bardem received a Best Actor nomination for his role as Ricky Ricardo in Meet the Ricardos.
Bardem said the couple was nervously watching the nominations together.
“There were many things that we were looking at,” he told Variety. “So it was a very interesting session, and then when the names came, we both were celebrating like crazy.”
Kirsten Dunst and husband Jesse Plemons were both nominated for their supporting roles in The Power of the Dog.
Dunst told Variety she was watching the nomination ceremony while her husband was at work. She said she called Plemons and was the first person to tell him about their nominations.
“He was a little shell shocked,” she said. “It’s just so crazy to be a couple and have our first nominations together. It’s like a storybook. You know what I mean? It’s so weird. It’s amazing.”
This is the third year in a row Netflix has been the most nominated company. Last year, it had 35 nominations.
Netflix has won 15 Academy Awards but is yet to win Best Picture. This year front-runners The Power of the Dog or Don’t Look Up could make history for the streaming service.
The Walt Disney Company received 23 nominations, including Best Picture for West Side Story and Nightmare Alley.
Encanto and Pixar Animation Studio’s Luca received Best Animated Feature nominations.
She is nominated this year for directing Best Picture nominee The Power of the Dog. She was first nominated for her film The Piano in 1993.
Campion is one of only seven women to have ever been nominated for directing. The other nominees include Lina Wertmüller for Seven Beauties, Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation, Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker, Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird, Chloé Zhao for Nomadland and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman.
Bingelow and Zhao are the only two winners.

Kirsten Dunst earned her first Oscar nomination Tuesday for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the Western drama.
In an interview Tuesday with Good Morning America, the actress said she feels “very lucky” to be a part of the film. Even more special, Dunst was nominated alongside her real-life partner Jesse Plemons, who plays her husband in The Power of the Dog.
“I was crying and then I literally screamed like a maniac when my manager called me and said oh Jesse’s nominated too,” Dunst told GMA. “To be nominated as a couple for our first time ever… it’s just a beautiful thing for our family.”
Kodi Smit-McPhee was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Power of the Dog.
“I’m so deeply honored,” he tweeted. “And over the moon to say the least that we were all recognized for our work together. Jesse/Kirsten/Benedict/Ari and of course JANE. I love you all so much.”
Disney and Pixar’s Luca, was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film. The Italian Embassy in the U.S. congratulated the film, inspired by a fictional Italian town.
“An Academy Award nomination for one of the Best Animated Feature Films is inspired by Italy, set in the fictional town of Portorosso!” the embassy tweeted.
“Well deserved for one of our favorite films from last year! Bravissimi!”
The singer is nominated alongside DIXSON for Best Original Song for “Be Alive” from the Best Picture nominated film King Richard.
She joins Billie Eilish, who was tapped for the title song from the James bond film No Time to Die, Lin-Manuel Miranda for Encanto’s “Dos Oruguitas,” Van Morrison for Belfast’s “Down to Joy,“and Diane Warren for Four Good Days’ “Somehow You Do.”
Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson also scored his first Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature Summer of Soul.
There are several first-time nominees in acting categories.
Kristen Stewart is considered a front-runner in the Best Leading Actress category for her portrayal as Princess Diana in Spencer.
The Best Supporting Actress category has four first-time nominees, including Kirsten Dunst for The Power of the Dog, Jessie Buckley for The Lost Daughter, Aunjanue Ellis for King Richard and Ariana DeBose for West Side Story.
The Best Supporting Actor category also saw a slew of first-time nominees, including Kodi Smit-McPhee and Jesse Plemons for The Power of the Dog, Troy Kotsur for CODA and Ciarán Hinds for Belfast.
Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, portrayed Patrizia Reggiani in the Ridley Scott film. Many expected her to receive her second Oscar nomination. She was nominated for Best Actress in 2019 for her role in A Star is Born. Gaga still walked away with an award that night. Her song “Shallows” won for Best Original Song.
This year’s nominees for Best Actress in a Leading Role include Jessica Chastain, Olivia Colman, Penélope Cruz, Nicole Kidman and Kristen Stewart.
House of Gucci was shut out from major categories, including Best Picture. The film did receive one nomination in the Make Up & Hairstyling category.
Top films include The Power of the Dog, Don’t Look Up, Dune, and West Side Story.
The Japanese film Drive My Car also scored a nomination.
