Newton, 26, and his longtime girlfriend welcomed a baby boy late last week in Atlanta. Newton announced the news Wednesday via Twitter.

“I’ve been quiet about this because I didn’t want to create a distraction for my team and appreciate the privacy in this joyous time,” Newton tweeted about the birth of his first child .
Newton left practice early on Christmas Eve to travel to Atlanta to be with his girlfriend for the child’s birth, according to The Charlotte Observer .
After the Panthers’ first score against the Falcons on Sunday, Newton took the ball into the end zone and rocked it like a baby, although later he said there was no significance to the move.
