For most of his career, the former Jets and current Panthers receiver had been known as “Robby Anderson.” But many noticed during the offseason that the Panthers’ official website had changed the spelling of Anderson’s first name to “Robbie.”

So, which one was correct? Anderson revealed Friday at a news conference that “Robbie” was his now preferred spelling.

He explained why.

Anderson also said that his return to “Robbie” was keyed by an offseason number change. He wore No. 11 his first six years in the league but switched to No. 3 this offseason.

“When I had ‘ie,’ I had the No. 3 [jersey], too,” Anderson said. “Like, throwback, know what I’m sayin’?”

Anderson isn’t the first player to announce a change to his name in 2022. Colts linebacker Darius Leonard revealed during training camp that he prefers to be called by his middle name — Shaquille — moving forward.

Anderson’s change shouldn’t be as hard for fans to remember as Leonard’s, but the spelling is bound to trip up at least a few of them.
