The Newburgh Police Department (NPD) said officers were alerted after the visitors made the gruesome discovery on trails close to the Old Lock and Dam area at about 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

According to the Evansville Courier and Press, police did not identify the human remains and have not determined a cause of death.

Newburgh police also did not mention what state the human remains were in when the park visitors discovered them.

Warrick County Coroner’s Office authorities are now assisting the NPD with their ongoing investigation.

The Old Lock and Dam, located at 525 East Highway 662 in Newburgh, is a popular tourist hotspot that features a boat dock, historic log cabins and walking trails.

Residents used to tourists enjoying their stay at the park were stunned to learn that remains had been found on the trails.

Debra Bencini told WEHT: “It’s shocking and disturbing. You would not expect it and you would not want to come upon it.

“I mean, shock and traumatic would that be. I don’t think I could forget it if I came upon something like that.”

Newsweek has contacted the NPD for comment.

Numerous instances where people have come across human remains have previously been reported by Newsweek.

In March, a man carrying out plumbing work at a mobile home in Pennsylvania found a decomposed body underneath it.

Tracey Douds told local TV station KDKA that on occasion she had smelled a foul odor around the home, but believed it had come from a dead animal.

Then when Douds’ boyfriend started work trying to fix a plumbing problem, he told her about the gruesome find.

Douds told the network: “He came out, he’s like ‘Tracey, you’re not going to believe this.’ He’s like ‘I think there’s a dead body under there.’”

At first, Douds believed her boyfriend was joking but when he went back to check he confirmed he had found bones.

She added: “I’m no Nancy Drew, but yeah, I’ve been freaked out for a long time. We’re a little traumatized, but it will be over soon.”

Earlier this year, a body was found inside the walls of a historic convention center in California.

While a construction crew worked on the remodel of the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center, in Oakland, they came across a decaying body in the walls of the building.

An Oakland Police Department previously told Newsweek: “Upon arrival, officers located what appears to be a deceased adult male, in late stages of decay.”
