California law enforcement is searching for an armed man who shot a deputy, putting him in serious but stable condition.

An armed man fired at the Paso Robles Police Department on Wednesday morning, prompting the San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol to respond to the scene. One San Luis Obispo County deputy was shot and is in serious but stable condition. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office told Newsweek he was taken to the hospital but could not share which medical facility.

The shooting began around 3:30 or 3:45 a.m. local time when the man fired at the Paso Robles Police Department building. San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Office called it an “active shooter situation” in a tweet and told people near downtown Paso Robles, a city in southern California, to shelter in place. Law enforcement is searching for the armed man and did not share any identifying details about the suspect.
