Sculley had made no secret of his feeling that he’d run Apple long enough, Earlier this year he was a candidate for the chairmanship of IBM, and he had also spoken of starting his own high-tech company on the East Coast. Sculley will remain chairman of Apple’s board. President Michael Spindler, who has run the company on a day-to-day basis since 1990 will take over as CEO.

Sculley has made Apple into a major force in the computer industry, but it’s unclear whether the company can hold its own as the coming convergence of the computer, telephone, television and information industries brings it up against a host of new competitors. One clue to the future: Sculley will be spending lots of time in New York-a place known not for electronic gadgets, but for the entertainment programs that make people want them.
