Newton, who already had two rushing touchdowns in the game, lined up in the shotgun formation with three seconds left and his opponent likely expecting the draw. He’s such a powerful downhill force it usually doesn’t matter whether or not the defense sees a run coming. But on this occasion, Seattle managed to meet him at the line of scrimmage and keep him from powering forward.

It would have been a dramatic comeback victory for New England had Newton’s run been successful. After trailing 35-23, Bill Belichick’s squad scored a quick touchdown, made a defensive stop and put the ball in Newton’s hands with more than a minute left. Newton led his team to the 1 but no further.

The Seahawks received a stellar performance from Russell Wilson, who after a pick-six on his first drive threw a touchdown pass each to five different receivers.

One of those pass-catchers, D.K. Metcalf, bested reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore on a deep ball in the first half and appeared to get into Gilmore’s head. Metcalf finished with four catches for a team-high 92 yards.
