The COVID-19 pandemic makes it impossible for amateurs or celebrities to compete — the first time in the event’s 75-year history. Nor will the world’s top golfers, such as Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas or Xander Schauffele, play in the event. That doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of good golf to be enjoyed.

This week’s competition, which features 156 entrants, will be split between the Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill courses; because of the pandemic, the Monterey Peninsula course has been cut from the event. Another change includes the weekend cut, which will take place after 36 holes instead of the usual 54. How the lack of amateurs affects the course layout remains to be seen, but it’s likely their absence will result in a more severely structured course.
